John Dinkel

John Dinkel began his automotive career in 1967 with Chrysler Corporation after earning two engineering degrees from the University of Michigan. Three years later he joined Car Life as Engineering Editor, followed by an almost 20-year career with Road & Track magazine, serving as Engineering Editor, Editor and Editor-in-Chief from 1972 to 1990.

In addition to this book, Dinkel authored the original Road & Track Illustrated Auto Dictionary, and has co-authored The Mazda RX-7: Mazda's Legendary Sports Car; Miata - Mazda MX-5: Mazda's Affordable Sports Car for the New Millennium and RX-8: World's First 4-door, 4-seat Sports Car.

Dinkel works with many automotive-related companies to create advertising, sales training and sales marketing products, including product guides, videos, source books and competitive comparisons. He helped direct public relations activities for Pirelli Tire, Saleen and Tokico. He currently consults for Visionary Vehicles and GTS Research, and is a regular contributor to several AAA publications and a variety of automotive magazines and websites.

Dinkel was responsible for the redesign of the Automobile Club of Southern California's award-winning magazine, Westways. He helped found the Motor Press Guild in Southern California, serving as its President in 1991. As an active member of the SAE, Dinkel has served as a Chairman, member, and panelist on various committees, and as an author and reviewer of SAE technical papers. In addition, Dinkel has chaired the University of Michigan Annual Fund and was the commencement speaker for the University of Michigan-Dearborn in 1987.

As a long-time SCCA member, Dinkel co-drove to two Escort Endurance Series championships and won the Nelson Ledges 24-hour endurance race four times.

The Mineola, New York native now lives in Irvine, California with his wife Leslie. In his spare time Dinkel is actively involved in a variety of youth sports programs.
