By the time the E36 3-series BMW was introduced in 1990 the name was widely respected, the E21 having arrived in 1975 and the E30 in 1983. This improved version also had a greater range of models. In addition to the four-door saloons with a wide range of engines there were estate and convertible derivatives together with a two-door Coupe and the Compact. In Germany there was also a four-door convertible conversion by Bauer.
