Review of Alex Zanardi - My Sweetest Victory from TheRaceSite.com - December 14, 2004
by David Haueter
"Alex Zanardi's return to racing has to be one of the greatest comeback stories in sports - any sport. I remember seeing the accident at the Lausitzring back in September of 2001 and thinking that was the end of Alex Zanardi. With the sheer violence of the accident it was amazing that he even lived, let alone would ever make it back to racing. Yet, in early December of 2004, I sat next to Alex during lunch at BMW of North America, talking about the past season of racing a 320i in the European Touring Car Championship and his prospects for a win in the 2005 season. The story of his comeback is an incredible one, but Alex is equally incredible as a person, with his positive attitude, his humbleness and his determination to continue doing the things he had always done, despite walking on two prosthetic legs.
The story of Alex's life, before, during and after the accident that nearly took his life is wonderfully told in Alex Zanardi - My Sweetest Victory, which Bentley Publishers have just published. Not just about his racing in the top levels of motorsport, Alex tells about growing up in Italy, getting into karting and moving up into Formula 3 and 3000 on his way to Formula 1 and CART. This book is more about his life (thus far) than the recovering from the accident and there are only two chapters devoted to the accident and his recovery. The book also includes 32 pages of color photos, from his earliest days in Italy to the present.
This is a great book, not just for Alex Zanardi fans, but for anyone that wants to read an incredible story of a person that is a real testament to the human spirit. Zanardi had it all, almost lost everything and through determination and willpower survived and has gone on to lead an enriching life, and is even racing again."
Alex Zanardi - My Sweetest Victory is available for $17.95 from Bentley Publishers, which can be reached via their website at www.bentleypublishers.com, or by phone at 1-800-423-4595.
